A Student's Winter Break Experience

Winter Break is considered a time to relax and get away from school. Bryan Villanueva, a freshman at South East High School describes his winter break experience.

As soon as the bell rang at SEHS on December 18 many students, including Villanueva, were anxious to get away from school. After three months of school, students needed a vacation.

Villanueva spent most of his winter break at home where he saw many of his relatives.

On Christmas, Villanueva stayed home to celebrate. For Christmas he recieve many presents from his parents and relatives. "I got nothing but clothes for Christmas," said Villanueva. Villanueva summarized his Christams in one word, boring.

On New Years, Villanueva's family hosted a party. As usual, his relatives came over to celebrate.

Unfortunately, Villanueva's winter break is over and he is now back in school.

A Hello To The Holidays

By Claudia Villegas

On Tuesday December 8th, the South East High School Music Program held their annual Winter Concert.
The Winter Concert was held in the SEHS auditorium, which was festively decorated by the stage design class.
The show began with a few guitar players playing “Jingle Bells” for the audience.
The Drum Line then performed cadences. Although they were short, the audience was amazed by the visuals performed by the drum line. German Quintero, a sophomore and squad leader, said he was completely speechless by the drum line’s performance.
After Drum Line performed, the SEHS Color Guard took the stage and performed “Sweet Dreams” by the Eurythmics. This is a preview of what their winter guard season will include.
Mariachi then took the stage and performed “Son De La Negra”, “Gema”, and “Como Quien Pierde una Estrella” by Alejandro Fernandez. The audience kept asking to hear more from the Mariachi, but it was time for the chamber group to perform.
While the Chamber Group members prepared it was time for intermission. During intermission the SEHS musical program sold “Air Grams” for 50 cents. Parents, teachers, and musicians were allowed to send a message to anyone they liked. This new idea turned out to be a success. During intermission, snacks like donuts and chips were sold. When intermission was over, the Chamber Group took the stage.
The Chamber Group performed “Salvation is Created” by Tschesnokoff. The Chamber Group is composed of senior band members and two junior saxophone players. The chamber group was created to recognize the seniors who have put their hard work and commitment into the band. “The performance was great. It feels great because all the hard work you put in finally pays off. It’s a really good feeling,” said senior Eduardo Mendoza.
The String Orchestra then performed a total of four songs which included “Go from my Window”, “Greensleeves”, “Nobodyes Gigge”, and “Mantras”.
After the orchestra, the concert band performed “Washington Post” and “Midnight Sleigh Ride.” Washington Post is one of the songs they will be performing at the South Gate Children Christmas Lane Parade on December 13. Joseph Folgar, a freshman at SEHS said, “I think the winter concert went great. It brought us all together.”
The show wasn’t over yet; the Marching Band and Color Guard then took the stage and performed “The Incredibles-Glory Days” and “Santa’s Parade”. Both musical pieces will also be performed at the parade.
The show then concluded with the concert band and string orchestra performing “Polar Express.” They asked the children at the Winter Concert to help the musicians by shaking little bells that they received at the beginning of the concert.
All the money raised will go towards the musical program and future events.
